Flicie de Fauveaus career began in the studio of the painter Louis Hersent, before she turned to sculpture. She was influenced by Paul Delaroche (1797-1856) but taught herself, alongside her younger brother Hippolyte (1804-1887). Close to Ary Scheffer, who painted her portrait, she developed a passion for the Middle Ages, infusing her work with a neo-Gothic style. Her debut at the 1827 Salon was with a relief of Christina, Queen of Sweden, (there is a plaster in the Muse de Louviers) which mesmerised Alexandre Dumas and was praised by Stendhal. At the 1830 Salon, she was awarded a medal for a holy water stoup depicting St Denis. In 1834, Flicie fled to Florence, where she stayed with the sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini. Joined by her brother Hippolyte, who led a studio with around thirty employees, she now devoted herself fully to her art.

Markings:

This head of Holofernes is the only remaining piece from an important bas-relief of Judith showing Holoferness head to the people of Bethulia, assembled in the town square, in polychrome marble, which is now lost. Commissioned by Baroness Augustine Gros in 1839, it was made by Flicie de Fauveau in 1842 and exhibited at the 1842 Salon. It is described in detail in the Salon livret (no. 1945). The work is only known from a drawing, in the National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh (op. cit. p. 143, no. 27; ill. Fig 1).
